Sweep Picking Lessons
Before we start with this lesson it is strongly recommended to warm-up both hands prior to playing the guitar to improve dexterity, otherwise you may find that your hands become sore especially after any lengthy session. So always give your hands a quick workout first.
With hands now primed and feeling lose lets get down to our sweep picking lesson.
The goal of sweep picking is to be able to stroke the guitar strings fluently, almost effortlessly with the help of your wrist to control the action. By combining this approach with your picking fingers you’ll be able to precisely produce the desired sound. Your right hand and arm should remain relaxed at all times, and by placing it lightly on the bridge of the guitar you’ll be able to better control reverb of the notes when fast picking, simply by dampening the strings very slightly.
Now that we’re setup lets start off with a simple sweep; the arpeggio.
This is a perfect example for anyone looking for an introduction into sweep picking lessons and is relatively simple to achieve. Locate the 14th fret and initially hammer on it, then rake the strings with a smooth downwards motion that passes through the first note of the first string. Then, on the way up rake the strings to the 10th fret all the way back to the fifth string in a smooth gliding motion, then rinse and repeat.

By breaking the sweep into small stages you will achieve faster results and in time be able to sweep fluently and accurately. However, you must try to focus on rhythm and tightness of the notes at all times by making sure that each note is held for the same period of time. Otherwise, you run the risk of steam-rolling through the sweep and ruining the overall effect.
Sweep Picking Lesson Tips
- Each note must be sounded separately and your first three fingers should barely leave the strings as you perform the sweep.
- Try to remain relaxed throughout the sweep; there should be as little tension as possible in your fretting fingers.
- Slightly angle the sweep pick downwards. Take note, if you over do the angle the clarity of sound will be ruined. In this case, little is most certainly more.
- Invest in a good quality hard plectrum and keep practicing.
