But what should you be expecting in these lessons whether you have some self-education in the guitar or you are a total beginner?
For one thing, you’ll need to learn all of the basics of the fretboard. When your guitar is in standard tuning, what notes are found where? From that foundation, you will expand into learning how to fret different chords. Like all guitar beginners do, first you’ll learn the standard “open” chords (chords that are played using at least one “open” or non-fretted string). Then you’ll move on playing bar (or barre) chords.
What else will be included in your beginning guitar lessons? After you’ve started learning some chords and basic strumming patterns, you’ll learn the basic of playing arpeggios. Arpeggio means “broken chord” in Italian. When you play an arpeggio, you play a chord, except you only play the different notes that make up the chord one at a time.
Using arpeggios is one of the most potent and effective ways that guitar players come up with creative “spice” in their playing. Whether you are playing classical, jazz, rock, steel-string finger-style, or most other genres of music, knowing how to play arpeggios on the guitar will give you a vast array of new sonic possibilities to express yourself with.
Of course, beginning guitar lessons could not be complete without also learning how to play scales. You’ll need to memorize the different scales so that you can play lead parts and write melodies. At the same time, you’ll me memorizing the different keys. Different keys include and exclude different notes, so that they act like a formula that you use to give yourself different musical expressions. There are 12 major keys and 12 minor keys.
As you learn the different keys, you’ll also have to learn about sharped and flatted notes. At first when you’re beginning guitar lessons, you will simply learn the seven basic notes A through G. But then, you’ll start learning about sharped and flatted notes–the notes that are “in between” the basic notes. As with your other tools, these sharps and flats give you more expressive possibilities than you would have with just the basic notes.

While you progress with all of these various musical tools, you’ll also be learning how to pick and strum. For most guitar players, picking and strumming are done with their right hand, and that right hand technique is vitally important to the guitar player’s expressiveness and style. The left hand gets most of the attention from people as it goes up and down the guitar’s neck, but without solid right hand technique you won ‘t be a very good guitar player at all. This is why beginning guitar lessons will introduce you to picking and strumming right away.
You might be playing with a pick or your fingers. You might also use fingerpicks or just a thumbpick along with your fingers. Of course, most people know that most rock, blues, and country guitar players use a pick. But learning how to pick and strum with your fingers or withfingerpicks gives you more possibilities than just using a single pick does, and knowing these techniques also enables you to play classical guitar,fingerstyle bluegrass, fingerstyle jazz, and other styles that you may wish to explore.
And of course, beginning guitar lessons cannot be complete without some ear training. You will learn to be more aware of what you are hearing and that will allow you to play and compose better music for yourself. So, there’s a lot to learn if you want to be a good guitar player–but with dedication and patience you can do it.
